Despite eventually getting a deal for Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona over the line, Arsenal failed in their other attempts to add to their squad in January.
Moves for Ivan Perisic and Yannick Carrasco either fell to pieces or never took off properly, but one that seemed like it could actually happen was Christopher Nkunku’s, currently at Paris Saint-Germain.
The young midfielder, whom Unai Emery highly rates, was the subject of long negotiations between the two sides over the past few days, and the Ligue 1 champions were actually open to him leaving.
However, despite Arsenal ‘really wanting’ Nkunku, according to L’Equipe, the attempts to secure a loan with a view to buy proved ‘too complicated’ to finalise in January for the English club, who had publicly admitted being financially restricted last month.
Contracted with Paris Saint-Germain until 2020, Nkunku’s next chance for a move away will be in the summer, and with more time on everyone’s hands and more money in the Gunners’ bank account, it wouldn’t be surprising if they managed to get something over the line.
