Having sold Emiliano Martínez to Aston Villa for a fee of around £16m, Arsenal needed a backup goalkeeper.

As things stand, the Gunners have Matt Macey and Dejan Iliev at their disposal, but neither will really provide Bernd Leno with the competition he needs, which is why they’ve turned their attention to Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson.

The Iceland international is currently at Dijon in France, but that is about to change, according to RMC journalist Mohamed Bouhafsi, since the Gunners and the Ligue 1 side have ‘reached an agreement’ for the 25-year-old’s transfer.

It’s explained Rúnarsson will move to the Emirates for the next five years for a fee of around €2m.

With that now sorted, it’s time for the medicals, and Bouhafsi reveals the shot stopper will do them in ‘two stages’.

The first will start today in Dijon, with the second lot to be done at a later date in Paris, although when that will be isn’t said.

This will be good news for Arteta and Arsenal, since they have made a healthy profit on their backup goalkeeper position, selling one for £16m with the replacement coming in for under £2m.
