Switzerland captain and Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka won’t be getting the football match he was expecting tonight, with Blick explaining the Swiss match against Ukraine has been called off after more positive Covid-19 tests in the away squad.
Three Ukraine players tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday, followed by another three on Tuesday morning, as well as the country’s physiotherapist.
UEFA rules state that as long as there’s 13 players available then the match can go ahead, however, despite Ukraine having enough bodies to put on the pitch, it’s stated the game won’t be happening.
Regional health authorities in Lucerne, Switzerland, have decided to quarantine the whole Ukraine squad. For Xhaka & Co, they’ll now have to wait and see where the points go for the match, if it can’t be played on another date.
There’s disagreement ahead, with the Swiss stance being it’s Ukraine who have had the positive tests, so if anyone forfeits it has to be them, and the away side of the belief this is a decision from medical authorities in Switzerland and therefore out of their hands.
For Arsenal, it’s probably positive news, the last thing they’ll have wanted is Xhaka put in danger of infection, especially after Mohamed Elneny’s positive Covid-19 test.
