Hertha Berlin would be interested in Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno this summer if they can move on Alexander Schwolow.
That’s according to BILD, who say Leno would be on a five-man shortlist of options for Hertha should a change in goalkeeper come about.
They explain that after two disappointing years as Hertha’s number one, Schwolow is free to leave the club this summer, provided the right offer comes in.
There are already interested parties, including Schalke, although there are doubts about whether they could handle the required transfer fee and wages.
Either way, a move somewhere could be on the cards, and that would leave Hertha looking for a new number one to fill the void.
Plans are already underway to find him, and Hertha have ‘drawn up a list of candidates’ who would be ‘Bundesliga suitable’.
Arsenal’s Leno is one of those on the list after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates following Aaron Ramsdale’s arrival at the club.
He has a history of playing in the Bundesliga after spells with Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen, so he would fit the bill in that regard and ‘can leave’ Arsenal this summer.
One major issue is his salary; with the German currently earning around €6m a year in London, a figure Hertha would not be able to match.
In fact, Leno would have to ‘forego a lot of salary’ to make the move, which is likely to be a complication in negotiations. He is, though, on the list of possible targets should Schwolow depart as expected.
