On October 2nd, we covered claims from AS explaining that Lucas Torreira is on his way out of Arsenal and will be flying to Madrid either on Friday or Saturday.

Today’s edition of AS states the midfielder arrived in the Spanish capital last night to sign for Atlético Madrid.

Uruguay take on Chile and Ecuador in the World Cup qualifiers later this month and the Gunners player has been included in Óscar Tabárez’s squad for the two fixtures.

Therefore, the ‘plan’ is for the former Sampdoria man to complete his medical and sign for the La Liga side on a loan deal. The idea, if there are no last minute setbacks, is to seal the deal before Torreira goes on international duty.

Mikel Arteta’s side wanted to sell the player or include a mandatory purchase option on a loan deal. Atlético only wanted to take the 24-year-old on a loan deal with an option to buy.

Los Rojiblancos have succeeded in their efforts to take him on loan and the deal includes a purchase option set at €20m.

AS warns the Gunners midfielder’s arrival on loan at Wanda Metropolitano is subject to the exit of one of Atlético players for ‘financial reasons’.

Héctor Herrera is the favourite to leave, followed by the likes of Thomas Lemar and Mario Hermoso.

Should things go as per the plan, Torreira will become the third Uruguayan at Atlético after José Giménez and Luis Suárez.
