Newcastle United made an approach to sign Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette, but he has refused to join them.

The striker has less than six months left on his contract and his situation at the north London club has caught the attention of the Magpies.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, ‘there have been contacts’ between the Tyneside club and the 30-year-old ‘in recent days’.

The former Lyon man received a proposal from Newcastle, worth €8m per season, for the next three-and-a-half years. However, the Gunners attacker has turned it down. It’s said the Frenchman has ‘decided not to marry the Newcastle project’ because of their current position in the league.

Eddie Howe’s side are 19th in the table with 12 points after 20 games, trailing 18th placed Norwich City [played 21 matches] by a point and two points behind 17th place Watford, who have two games in hand.

With Lacazette rejecting Newcastle’s approach, likely for January, he can leave Arsenal as a free agent next summer, if he refuses to sign a new deal with Mikel Arteta’s side. The player has two goals and three assists for the Gunners in the last five league matches.
