Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is a potential target for Real Betis should he be available on a free transfer next summer.

That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who say the Spanish side are desperate to improve their defence, which is the leakiest in La Liga this season.

Another two goals conceded in a defeat to Eibar on Monday means they have now conceded 23 goals in 11 games and sit on minus 11 on goal difference.

It’s a problem that manager Manuel Pellegrini is keen to fix, but Estadio explain that he can’t in January as there simply isn’t enough money at the club nor is there space in the salary cap.

That could change if there are transfers out of the club, but if not, they will have to wait until next summer to make the required changes.

If that is the case, there is an ‘interesting range’ of ‘high market value’ players who may be available on a free transfer by that point.

One of them is Mustafi, who is in the final year of his contract with Arsenal and extremely unlikely to renew after falling down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta.

He’s already been linked with a return to Spain with Barcelona, who are looking at centre back options following Gerard Pique’s recent injury.

It seems they may not be his only option, though, with Betis also eyeing a move for the Arsenal man in an attempt to solve their own defensive woes.
