Hertha Berlin are unwilling to break their salary structure to secure the signing of Granit Xhaka from Arsenal.

Xhaka’s situation at the Emirates remains precarious after his fall out with the club’s fans at the end of October.

Yesterday we covered a report that said he’d informed his teammates he would be on the move in January.

That was followed by a second report in which it was claimed he had already agreed on terms with Hertha Berlin and they now needed to negotiate with Arsenal.

That’s confirmed by Sky today, who say that Xhaka is ‘the number one dream’ for the Bundesliga club.

They are yet to negotiate with Arsenal over a move but have to put together a ‘financially sensible package’ for the midfielder.

Unlike yesterday’s report, there is no mention of an existing agreement with Xhaka, although it is made clear that they are ‘unwilling to break the salary structure’ despite the support of a new investor at the club.

That suggests a move is not quite as advanced as it was suggested yesterday and that Xhaka may have to make some allowances to get the deal over the line.
