Think of a young Portuguese talent, who plays for a big club, was linked to sides such as Manchester United and Arsenal, has a huge release clause and a career managed by the super agent Jorge Mendes.
We’ve seen many players who fit these characteristics in the past few years, but it’s Benfica’s Gonçalo Guedes who we’re talking about now.
Record have published an article saying Benfica have had a lot of requests for information on the 20 year old. Even though they have no intention of seeing him leaving, the size of the clubs who have shown their interest is making the Eagles alert.
Arsenal and PSG are said to be two main sides who have been following him.
The striker had an agreement to join Valencia on a €30m transfer, but given the Spanish side’s crisis and the new demands from Benfica, the deal didn’t happen.
Manchester United would also be another club who have been keeping an eye on the player, but have never held talks with Benfica regarding a move.
Guedes has a €60m release clause, and only a very good bid would convince Benfica to sell him in the summer. A January move is said to be highly unlikely.
This just seems to be a standard Portuguese report hyping up interest, which at this stage is likely to be just that… interest in the player. Both Manchester United and Arsenal regularly scout in Portugal and will be well aware of Guedes.
Jose Mourinho is also represented by Guedes’ agent Mendes, but Arsene Wenger isn’t so keen on the agent. Despite that, the Arsenal manager has made it clear he wouldn’t let that get in the way of signing a Mendes client.
