On Thursday, we relayed information from Plaza Deportiva in Spain that both Arsenal and Manchester City were very interested in Valencia’s left-back José Gayà.
Both Pep Guardiola and Arsene Wenger were said to have followed the young defender for quite some time now, with the Gunners’ manager tracking him ever since he was playing in the Spanish side’s youth sides.
Despite all this information about interest, a price was never revealed, but that could be because Valencia would likely ask for the player’s release clause, which currently stands at €50m.
Quite a hefty price for a defender whose team has shipped 61 goals so far in the league this season, meaning clubs could be put off, but that could easily change in 2018. According to the very same Plaza Deportiva, as of next summer, José Gayà’s release clause is set to drop from €50m to €30m next June.
A far more affordable price, and one that would make a lot of sense for a host of Premier League clubs looking to bolster their defence.
We’ll have to wait and see if Valencia would be willing to negotiate this summer for their starlet, but, if true, this release clause news could force more than one interested club to wait until next year.
Whether Manchester City or Arsenal act upon, remains to be seen.
