The 5th of May was meant to be the time when we found out more about the Wojciech Szczesny to Napoli situation, once the Arsenal loanee had held a meeting with the Gunners about his future.
However, it appears Il Mattino know a bit more than other outlets, or that’s what they want you to think.
According to the Italian paper, the Arsenal goalkeeper would be the ideal man to replace an ageing Pepe Reina in between Napoli’s sticks, but there’s one little problem: Szczesny isn’t all that interested in staying in Italy.
Il Mattino explain the Poland international would in fact favour a return to the Premier League, the league he developed in in the first place.
With Petr Cech showing strong signs of decline ever since he moved to the Emirates, there’s a strong chance Arsène Wenger could turn to his former protégé for next season, saving him the cost of bringing someone else in in the process.
Whether that happens remains to be seen, but that’s the angle being pushed in Italy right now, where they would like Szczesny to stay after two promising years on loan at Roma.
Their alternatives, if you were wondering, are Genoa’s Mattia Perin and Paris Saint-Germain’s Salvatore Sirigu.
