Three weeks. That’s how long it’s taken since the end of the transfer window to get our first Karim Benzema to Arsenal story.
We’re going to put it out there from the start and say we don’t believe this one bit, but it’s better to cover this now than it get picked up somewhere and blown up into something it’s not.
On Wednesday, Mercafutbol published an article claiming the Real Madrid striker was still Arsène Wenger’s dream signing to lead the Arsenal line, and that he would be prepared to spend up to €47m for the former Lyon star next summer.
In all fairness, they do also make it clear this would be nearly impossible if FIFA do ban Real Madrid from signing new players for two transfer window.
The problem with all of this is there’s no guarantee Arsène Wenger will be Arsenal’s manager next season, and if he has a similar season to his previous five or so, the London club might decide to call it a day on an overall very successful era.
Also, there’s now a certain Lucas Pérez who might have something to say about all this.
Furthermore, Mercafutbol explain Zidane doesn’t want Benzema to leave, and Real Madrid are prepared to offer him a new contract.
Basically, it’s a bit of a nothing story, really, and that’s the way it should stay.
