Barcelona have got a shortlist to take over from Luis Enrique at Barcelona, report Mundo Deportivo on Wednesday. That shortlist is Ernesto Valverde of Athletic Club Bilbao, Enrique’s Barcelona assistant Juan Carlos Unzué, Eusebio Sacristán of Real Sociedad, and Ronald Koeman.
Mundo Deportivo have also looked at a long list of other potential candidates who have now been largely discarded. One of those is a double act. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is currently an assistant to Roberto Martinez with Belgium, having left a role working under Arsene Wenger.
The pair visited Barcelona to watch a match in February, and it’s claimed they’re thought of well at the club. Henry left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2007 and is often happy to be associated with the club, and Martinez is Catalan which gives his chances an automatic boost.
Henry has limited coaching experience and his Arsenal days were numbered once Wenger decided being a coach and a pundit wasn’t conducive. Henry then went on to take the Belgium position.
Interest in the Arsenal legend taking over at Barcelona with Martinez doesn’t seem to be overly serious, but it’s certaintly an intriguing proposition put forward by Mundo Deportivo.
Perhaps if Henry and Martinez have success with their double act in next year’s World Cup they can look on to other things… like Arsenal.
