Arsenal are keen on AZ Alkmaar midfielder Teun Koopmeiners as Mikel Arteta looks to enforce his midfield this summer.

That’s according to Alkmaar fan website AZ Fanpage, who say their sources have confirmed Arsenal are the side to have shown interest in England.

Koopmeiners, a defensive midfielder who can play in central midfield and at centre back, has enjoyed a superb campaign with Alkmaar, making 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and registering three assists.

His performances have earned him attention from outside of the Netherlands, with the player admitting that there had been interest from England.

He elected not to name who that club was, but several were named as suitors, including Manchester United, who were rumoured to be interested last summer.

It is, however, Arsenal who are the interested party according to AZ Fanpage, who say ‘reliable sources’ have revealed that the Gunners are keen.

Arteta is said to be ‘urgently looking for reinforcements’ this summer and is determined to add a ‘captain’ to the middle of the park.

Koopmeiners’ performances for AZ, who he also captains, have seemingly caught his eye and they could make a move this summer.

Now, naturally, the rumour is to be taken with a pinch of salt given it’s coming from a club specific website, but there could be some credence to it.

It is, after all, undeniable that Arsenal are in desperate need of improvement in midfield. That issue will only become more pressing if Arteta cannot resolve his issues with Mattéo Guendouzi.

If he leaves Arsenal will need a replacement but with funds at the Emirates thought to be tight, perhaps they are looking at potential bargains.

Koopmeiners is one such option, with it unlikely he would cost the earth – indeed some rumours have suggested he’s available for as little as €15m, a price that would be more than affordable in the current market.
