A few days ago, the Daily Mirror claimed that Arsenal were scouting Mainz’s Abdou Diallo, which excited the French press.

Well, it appears that RMC Sport did a little digging of their own, and the French media outlet confirm what their English counterparts claimed: the Gunners really are interested.

According to them, this is all down to Sven Mislintat, who slipped the France U21 captain’s name, signed by the Bundesliga club from Monaco over the summer, in Wenger’s ear.

Considering he changed clubs for €6m just six months ago, RMC make it clear there’s very little chance of the German side letting their new starlet go in January, meaning this is a move that has summer of 2018 written all over it if it takes place.

Furthermore, Mainz’s stance could be different come the end of the campaign if they were to receive a ‘substantial offer’ for the 21-year-old.

With Per Mertesacker retiring, Laurent Koscielny on the wrong side of 30 and Arsène Wenger seemingly intent on continuing with a three at the back formation, defensive reinforcements will be needed at some point, and Diallo has all the attributes required to be of help.
