Clearly a wanted man, Cody Gakpo should have a nice selection of clubs to choose from going forward, among which could be Arsenal.
We say this because, last Friday, the Gunners were said to be one of the teams looking at the Dutchman, who has also attracted reported interest from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
In fact, it was claimed that there was a ‘strong suspicion’ that Arsenal would be there this summer for a €40m+ transfer, which was commented on by Sjoerd Mossou, speaking to Etienne Verhoeff on the AD Voetbalpodcast.
He said: “He’s a great professional, a good boy and a great footballer, but what kind of club he should transfer to is a difficult one. We have seen in the past that Memphis Depay to Manchester United was a step too high. If I were Gakpo, I would go for a club just below the absolute top. Think of the Sevilla, Lyon or Arsenal category. You have to play.”
That’s something Louis van Gaal, the Netherlands manager, has already told Gakpo, and it will be crucial in the player’s development going forward.
Considering Arsenal lost Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January and could end up seeing Alexandre Lacazette leave on a free this summer, there is room for a player like the Dutchman at the Emirates going forward.
The 22-year-old left-winger, who can also play up front, has scored 16 goals and assisted another 15 in 37 appearances for PSV Eindhoven this season.
