Étienne Capoue was perhaps an inevitable loss for Watford in the January transfer window.

The 32-year-old midfielder no doubt thought he was too good to spend the autumn of his career in the Championship, and a move to La Liga was rumoured for several months.

Valencia and former Watford manager Javi Gracia were on the chase, but due to their troubled finances and lack of ability to get much right, they saw him go to Villarreal instead.

Capoue has only played two matches for Villarreal since his Watford exit, but has already managed to impress. El Periodico Mediterraneo, a newspaper close to the La Liga club, say the player ‘arrived like a bull’, referring to him being in peak physical condition.

They add: ‘In just 10 days, the recent signing of Villarreal CF has adapted perfectly to his new destination.’

Happy with being given such an opportunity, Capoue sees the move as a ‘personal challenge’, and has been impressing both on and off the pitch. His effort and ‘tactical intelligence’ is already winning fans, and it’s stated that ‘without a doubt’ the transfer has been a success.
