We have a theory at Sport Witness that it’s not officially the transfer window in Italy until Gazzetta dello Sport have a transfer story with a wheel with percentages.
Well, rest assured, the Italian newspaper have finally embraced the silly season in an article about Mauro Icardi and where the Inter Milan striker could end up next season.
Over the course of the past few months, things have gone from “he’s not for sale” to “well… maybe he is, but only at the right price”.
A lot of this seems to be coming from his wife and agent, Wanda Nara, who keeps hinting at a possible move, but that could also be a ploy to get her husband a new contract.
The Italian newspaper even allude to that by saying the player wouldn’t mind a pay rise, especially considering his importance for the side and the fact he is ‘only’ on €2.5m/year compared to Geoffrey Kondogbia’s €4m salary.
Nevertheless, Gazzetta are happy to go along with the transfer idea, and they give us their estimation as to where the Argentinean striker might move to.
Top of the pile with a strong 40% are Atlético Madrid, as Diego Simeone looks for a new goalscorer to take them to the next level.
Just behind, both on 25% are Paris Saint-Germain and Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, with Juventus bringing up the rear with a measly 10%.
Despite signing Michy Batshuayi from Marseille, it seems the new Premier League manager isn’t satisfied with his attacking options, with talks of interest in Alvaro Morata being sporadically published alongside this Icardi news.
We wouldn’t read too much into this one just yet, though.
