Former Argentina international Herman Crespo has told the Italian media AC Milan signing Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu is a gamble worth taking. The Spaniard has joined the Serie A side on loan until the end of the season, after Ronald Koeman decided Everton’s squad didn’t need the player.

Calciomercato on Crespo’s comments and the Argentine believes the Everton loanee will prosper under AC Milan coach Vincenzo Montella, which will help the move turn into a good signing by the club. Crespo said Deulofeu has always been an outsider at his previous clubs, and has shown he has the character to succeed.

“I do not think coaches make decisions because of false stories. Right now Deulofeu has security with Montella and I think this is a gamble like what happened to Napoli with Mertens. The Spaniard has always been an outsider and he has showed a great character,” said the former AC Milan star.

Deulofeu was signed by former Everton manager Roberto Martinez from Barcelona in 2015, but under current boss Koeman the 22-year-old has struggled to get enough playing time. The winger made just eleven Premier League appearances for Everton this season, which were mainly coming off the bench.

Deulofeu will loaned out to AC Milan until the end of the season, and has already received praise in the Italian press. With Milan having no buying option, and Barcelona unable to buy Deulofeu back and immediately sell him, Everton can name their price in the summer.
