Some West Ham fans will certainly remember the name Gonzalo Montiel, the River Plate fullback who’s been linked to the Premier League side for a while now.
It turns out this rumour has been brought back today, this time in a story from Argentine outlet El Intransigente.
Their article is actually about Enzo Perez, but when mentioning Montiel, the website points out the player has ‘several proposals’ to leave the Buenos Aires side, with the Hammers among them.
Bologna, Lyon, Roma and West Ham are named as ‘some’ of the clubs who want the 24-year-old and could sign him very soon.
Gonzalo Montiel has been linked to West Ham for a year now. The difference this time is that he’s already able to sign a pre-contract with any club, since his deal with River Plate expires in six months.
A January move is obviously on the table as well, as the fullback could leave the club after the end of the Copa Libertadores. River Plate lost to Palmeiras 3-0 in the first leg of the semifinals, and are playing the decisive game in São Paulo tomorrow.
That’s likely to be the end of the line for them in the competition, and would give West Ham a better chance this month. A work permit would also be easier under the new rules, and with Montiel’s participation in the latter stages of the Copa Libertadores.
