Already missing Nicolò Barella for the Liverpool games through suspension, there is now a chance that Inter could be without Alessandro Bastoni for the first leg too.
Already serving a two match ban in Serie A for telling the assistant referee he was ‘rubbish’, the player is also now injured, limping off in the Coppa Italia quarter-final against AS Roma on Tuesday evening after 45 minutes.
Spraining his right ankle, the player is set to undergo exams on Wednesday to confirm the severity of the injury, but Gazzetta dello Sport make it clear he is ‘at risk for Liverpool’.
FC Inter 1908, covering this news, point out in their headline there’s something of an ‘anxiety’ surrounding the news that Bastoni could be out, and we’ll have to wait and see if he does miss the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, to be played at San Siro.
If he does, that will be a boost for Jürgen Klopp and his men, who would have to make do without two key players: the centre-back and the aforementioned Barella.
The 25-year-old was sent off in the final game of the group stages against Real Madrid, and was served with a two match ban for his straight red card, meaning he will miss the return leg at Anfield as well.
