Frenkie de Jong’s situation has been encouraging some sympathy in the Catalan media, with Barcelona pushing the midfielder to sign for Manchester United.

Monday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo has a column which explains the pressure being put on the Dutchman to move to Old Trafford. It’s explained that someone at the Camp Nou leaked De Jong’s wage situation, but didn’t also leak that he’d accepted a pay cut like several of his teammates, with the insinuation the whole plan was to make the player look bad.

According to the report, Barcelona no longer see De Jong as a footballer, but rather a commodity from which they can make money. There’s set to be another meeting between the Blaugrana and their player, and ‘another little push’ to encourage him to leave.

Over at Sport, another Catalan newspaper, they point out Xavi Hernandez has used De Jong as a central defender in the past two matches. The manager has insisted this isn’t him sending any kind of transfer message, but Sport aren’t convinced.

They believe the player is being made aware how hard it will be for him to find a place in Barcelona’s midfield next season.

The report states Barcelona ‘have an agreement’ with Manchester United for the player’s transfer, and they want to go through with that, sooner rather than later.
