Liverpool loanee Lazar Markovic may miss one of Sporting’s most important games of the season due to an injury. Markovic was made available in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp not thinking he needed to Serbian international.
A right winger, Markovic can also play on the left or through the middle and faced much competition at Liverpool. With the likes of Coutinho, Firmino, Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana and Divock Origi all able to play across the second, or front, line, Markovic was squeezed out.
The player was brought off during Sporting’s Champions League game against Legia Warsaw as he was feeling pain on his groin. Markovic spent some time on the bench talking to the club’s doctor, and although it didn’t seem a big problem at first, it could take him out of the next match.
According to Record, the winger was examined at the training centre on Wednesday and Sporting’s staff is still not sure if he’ll be available for the weekend or not.
Sporting will be facing Benfica on Sunday. As the Lions are only two points behind, it’s a good chance to win and be on top of the table.
Markovic is not a regular starter for Sporting, but is a player who has much confidence from the manager Jorge Jesus and is frequently used in big matches.
To miss out on the match would be a big blow, and more serious if it then leads to a further period mainly out of the team. Liverpool will be concerned that Markovic has started only 2 league games so far, and 2 in the Champions League.
Without things changing the player’s value will continue to drop, meaning if Klopp doesn’t want him, Liverpool will struggle to get a decent fee.
