Leonardo Bonucci could be leaving Milan this summer.

This is one of the big stories in Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday, as the Italian newspaper look at what the Serie A club’s summer could look like, and their needs on the transfer market.

The report comes after a few weeks of the 31-year-old being linked with Manchester United by a number of local newspapers, but the official line was always their captain would not be sold.

However, with their bank balance near zero, the revenue from a sale could be ideal for Milan for incoming negotiations.

Hearing about this, Bonucci is said to have begun ‘considering a way out from the Rossoneri, to which he would not be opposed, even if it isn’t the primary scenario he had in mind’.

Manchester United have been linked repeatedly since May, several times a week in Italy, and two days ago Gazzetta insisted the interest is still there.

Were he to leave, he’d want a club that plays in Europe, which is where someone like Manchester United would come in, directly qualified for the Champions League group stage.

Paris Saint-Germain are the club mentioned in Gazzetta’s article, especially with Gianluigi Buffon recently signing there, but anything the French club can offer, so can the Red Devils.

Champions League football. Tick. A wage package as big or even bigger than what he earns at Milan. Tick. The possibility of being a ‘cornerstone’ of his new team. Most likely tick.

Before any of this happens, however, Leonardo Bonucci would need to voice his desire to leave, and he has yet to do that.

If he knocks on Gennaro Gattuso’s door, then everything changes.
