Antwerp boss Mark van Bommel has confirmed forward Manuel Benson has asked to join Burnley and the move is on the cards.
Benson has been linked with a move to Turf Moor over the last few weeks, with negotiations ongoing between the two clubs.
It has progressed this week after Burnley made a second bid, with it reported yesterday that they had reached a ‘final agreement’ with Antwerp.
That stated the details of the detail had been sorted and Benson was flying for a medical today ahead of completing the move.
It means that Benson won’t be featuring for Antwerp tomorrow when they take on Lillestrom in the first leg of their Europa Conference League third qualifying round first leg.
It’s a big loss for the Belgian side and Van Bommel was asked about the player’s potential move to Burnley in the press conference before the game.
“Benny played well in my opinion,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
“Look: if a player wants to leave, you can stop him at all costs. Sometimes you have to, but now we decided not to.
“You are dealing with a player who wants to make that step, and there had already been talks. We have to take that into account.”
