Last summer, Leeds United strengthened their attacking division by adding Luis Sinisterra and Wilfried Gnonto to their squad.
The Whites could have further bolstered their strike force by signing Benfica star Gonçalo Ramos last summer.
That’s according to Saturday’s AS, who state Leeds made an effort to land the 21-year-old in 2022.
The Portugal international has scored 24 goals and registered 10 assists from 36 matches in all competitions this season. Benfica considered selling him last summer because some within the club were of the belief he couldn’t become a top-level striker.
Therefore, there were favourable reports to sanction Ramos’ sale and Leeds were one of the clubs to have made an offer. The details of the Whites’ proposal aren’t mentioned but it didn’t meet the Eagles’ demands, which is why the deal didn’t take shape.
Ramos’ situation has changed drastically this season, where he even scored a hat-trick for his country against Switzerland at the World Cup.
He’s now one of the most wanted frontmen in Europe as clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid have Ramos on their agenda for the next window.
Leeds United clearly had the right idea, but not the right money.
