In need of a new striker in January, Manchester United signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley.

The Dutchman took Cristiano Ronaldo’s place at Old Trafford after the latter left last November.

Instead of Weghorst, Manchester United could have signed Juventus’ Dušan Vlahović, according to AS.

AS make it clear they have learned from sources directly involved in the negotiations that the Serie A side were open to letting the 23-year-old join the Red Devils.

In fact, the Old Lady ‘negotiated the sale’ with Erik ten Hag’s side but the deal didn’t take shape because the Serbia international’s agent ‘stopped everything’.

Manchester United were left frustrated as they wanted a goalscorer to replace Ronaldo in the last window and Vlahović was the chosen one.

Following January’s disappointment, the English club decided to wait for him until the summer.

Vlahović hasn’t been able to replicate his Fiorentina form at the Turin club but continues to draw attention from other clubs. Manchester United may face competition from Real Madrid as they are attentive to his situation at Juve.

The Serbian has 10 goals and four assists from 23 matches this season.
