Steven Bergwijn’s agent has admitted he would be delighted if the Tottenham Hotspur player end up at Napoli, but did stress there is no open track for him to leave the north London club for the Serie A side in the winter market.
The forward is represented by Muy Manero and the agency’s director in Italy, Francesco Miniero, made these claims during an interview with Calciomercato.it.
“Seeing him at Napoli would be an honour, but there’s really nothing,” Miniero said.
The 24-year-old’s representative admitted Inter Milan came close to securing his client’s services when he was at PSV Eindhoven and when Luciano Spalletti was at the San Siro.
Spalletti, who is now in charge of Napoli, managed Inter between 2017 and 2019, and was replaced by Antonio Conte. Miniero has now hinted the arrival of the present Spurs manager at the San Siro was the reason why the Netherlands international didn’t join the Nerazzurri.
“Bergwijn was very close to Inter, but then in that summer, Spalletti left. If a coach who played with 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 had arrived, he would have joined the Nerazzurri,” the agent added.
Bergwijn has made three league starts and those came in the first three matches of this season. He has struggled with poor form and fitness and is now recovering from injury. Conte said on Friday that he expects the Dutchman to “come back very soon”.
Meanwhile, Ajax are said to be interested in Bergwijn, but De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen has stressed the former Chelsea manager is not keen to let any of his players leave Spurs in January.
