The Danish media love linking Christian Eriksen with Barcelona. For years, without more reasoning than Eriksen being good and Barca being Barca, the story has been pushed forward.
One of the latest Danish efforts came from BT newspaper who suggested in March that Eriksen could move on from Tottenham to one of the world’s truly biggest clubs, like Barcelona.
Therefore, any suggestion in the English media that Barcelona are interested is going to be grasped. The Daily Mirror reported at the weekend that Eriksen is a genuine target for Barcelona, and that the Catalan club would use Michael Laudrup to convince the player to leave Tottenham.
That was all quickly picked up in Denmark, and Ekstra Bladet have spoken to an agent and a Catalan journalist. Mikkel Beck is the agent for Lucas Digne, and speaks to Barcelona regularly, and his take on it is: “I talk regularly with Barcelona’s sports director, and I do not know about the interest from Barcelona.
“It is not certain that he shares everything with me, but as I understand it, it is not the position they are looking for players in.”
Beck added that Barcelona would likely rate Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic as better, and therefore wouldn’t go into a big bucks battle with Tottenham.
Catalan journalist Albert Masnou was ‘very unsure’ Eriksen is even a target: “I do not know, I really do not know. I don’t have any information about it from the club, and I don’t know if Eriksen is actually on Barcelona’s wish list.
“The rumour comes from the English press, and we have only published what they said. At present we do not have any information from the club that Christian Eriksen is a possibility for the club.”
Masnou works for Sport so for him to talk down the rumour, when Sport usually specialise in talking them up, shows how little he feels is in this.
The Danish media would dearly like to take this rumour seriously, but are having problems doing so. Even the Catalan press aren’t bothering with it too much.
That should tell Tottenham fans all they need to know.
