Manchester United and Chelsea were looking to sign a new striker in the winter market and the Red Devils succeeded as they took Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua.

Prior to signing Ighalo, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and the Blues were linked to Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani. Atletico Madrid were also keen on the 32-year-old, but they failed to get the deal over the line.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo was critical of the Uruguayan’s agent, after his side’s failure to sign the forward.

“I think it’s shameful the situation of some players with their agents and relatives. We’re not here to be robbed,” Cerezo said.

Following the comments made by the La Liga club’s chief, Cadena Ser got in touch with Cavani’s brother and agent Walter Guglielmone for a response.

Guglielmone explained why his client’s transfer to Diego Simeone’s side never materialised and also stressed Cavani would have joined Manchester United or Chelsea, if money was the motive.

“Do you think that Edi did not play for almost a month with the PSG so that I could drop the operation for a commission and that Edi did not fulfil his dream of going to Atletico Madrid?” Guglielmone explained.

“And all the mess we ride with PSG… Because if it were for money, Edi would have gone to England, Manchester (United) or Chelsea.”

Cavani’s contract with PSG expires after this season and he can join a new club on a free transfer in the summer.

Meanwhile, Cavani’s mother Berta Gómez echoed Guglielmone’s comments. Speaking to AS, she said: “Edinson did not want money to be a problem, because if it had been for money he would have gone to Manchester United, Chelsea or Inter Miami (David Beckham Club), who made an important offer for him.

“Let no one forget that my son has an impeccable career, he is a complete professional, and that the pressure he put on PSG with not playing to go out to Atletico is a stain on his career.”
