Having been unavailable for a chunk of the season so far, Diogo Dalot started his first Premier League game of the season on Sunday, taking part for 60 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
Last season he managed around 1000 minutes in the league, as well as picking up further time in other competitions.
Dalot was only 19 years of age when he moved to Old Trafford. He hadn’t established himself as a regular at FC Porto and was injured before he arrived at Manchester United.
His agent Carlos Goncalves has been speaking to Record about his clients, and Dalot was inevitably one of the players the Portuguese newspaper brought up.
When asked about the injury problems, the agent explained: “In fact, Diogo was injured before Manchester United. So Jose Mourinho was very important, because making a transfer for a player who has just been operated on involves a lot of courage. And it was Diogo’s choice. It was a case where we had several solutions for him and the player decided where he wanted to play.”
Record then asked Goncalves to name the other clubs who were interested, and he refused to reveal names: “I can’t say, but they were other great European clubs.”
Asked if Dalot can this season breakthrough at United and become one of the club’s major players, the agent said: “Unfortunately he again had some minor injuries, now eradicated. The first year was good for a 19 year old at a club like Manchester United and in the Premier League. But of course we hope this year can be a statement year.”
The 20 year old is going to find it difficult to hold down a spot at right back, given the purchase of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace.
