Earlier this month, Argentine newspaper Olé reported that Manchester United have joined the race for the transfer of River Plate star Julián Álvarez.
The striker has been in fine form this season, managing 24 goals and 15 assists in 46 matches in all competitions, and his impressive displays have caught the attention of the Red Devils.
According to TyC Sports, the Old Trafford club ‘want’ the 21-year-old and have decided to work for his signing.
The player’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has ‘received a call’ from United. The English club did this with a ‘clear intention’, to arrange a meeting, to know the conditions to carry out the operation. This meeting is set to take place after December 31st.
River Plate’s intention is to retain the Argentina international. The Premier League side are aware of this and know very well that if they need to secure Álvarez’s services, they will have to trigger his €20m release clause. This ‘does not seem like a crazy amount’.
The attacker’s current deal with the South American side runs down in December 2020. River Plate trust their prized asset will still be at the club beyond the winter market and also ‘United’s interest would not be to buy the forward now’.
To sum it up, the Premier League side have called Álvarez’s agent to set up a meeting, to know how they can sign his client. United ‘want’ him, but River Plate are of the belief they can manage to retain the attacker beyond January.
