The agent of Manchester City midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko has revealed Arsenal tried to sign the youngster a few years ago. The Ukraine international joined Manchester City in the summer transfer window after impressing for his club and country in the past 12 months.

Speaking to Championat, Sandor Varga confirmed Arsenal’s interest in Zinchenko, and Arsene Wenger’s desire to sign the 19-year-old. Varga claimed Wenger informed him he wanted a player in the style of Zinchenko and promised him first team football.

Zinchenko’s agent revealed Wenger went to the extent of planning to write to the midfielder’s parents because he was only 17 years old at the time.

Varga claimed: “I could not believe my ears. It turned out I hadn’t misheard. (Wenger said) ‘I am now standing, watching the game with our juniors. They beat us. I need this player. I know that he is 17 years old. I will prepare a letter to invite his family. He will play in my first team.'”

Zinchenko joined Manchester City in the last window after having only one season with his former club Ufa. The attacking midfielder was loaned out to PSV close to the last transfer deadline, with no room in Pep Guardiola’s squad, and after some injury problems he’s started to get games with the Dutch champions.
