When Huddersfield’s Steve Mounié was bought from Montpellier for £11.7m, he was the club’s most expensive signing ever, until this season when the Terriers splashed £18m on Terence Kongolo from Monaco.
The Benin international started his time at John Smith’s Stadium in spectacular fashion, scoring two goals in his first game against Crystal Palace, but then they were too few and far between.
Finishing the campaign with seven in 28 appearances, the striker didn’t fully justify the expense, but there was hope his second season would be more consistent.
Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case, as Huddersfield have struggled as a team so far, especially up front, and Mounié has yet to score in 9 appearances.
He said: “He’s the best option. You still need to get him out of Huddersfield, who are fighting against relegation, but he’s a player who had a good year in Ligue 1, and who started well in the Premier League.
“He’s not playing that much at the moment, but are his club going to accept to let him go, I don’t know. But it’s interesting, there’s potential and it’s a profile that Marseille don’t have”.
Far more agile than Kostas Mitroglou and stronger (and taller) than Valère Germain, Mounié represents a slight combination of the pair, and, as Le Mée said, he already knows the league well.
As Marseille continue their fight to get a spot in the Champions League, there’s the feeling they could invest in a new striker in January, having already tried to sign Mario Balotelli over the summer.
How much Huddersfield would want for Mounié, we don’t know, but they would, at least, want their money back, which could prove a bit too expensive for the Ligue 1 outfit.
