Earlier on Tuesday we covered reports from Germany of Celtic fans partying ahead of the club’s Champions League match against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Although there had been reports of some trouble about the visitors from Celtic Park, the atmosphere was said to be largely good. Police were ramping up their operations, but just like they would do ahead of any big football match, not specifically because Celtic are visiting.

1000 Celtic fans had been drinking and singing on Monday evening, with Dusseldorf’s old town ringing out to the sounds of songs from followers of the Glasgow team.

The German media are covering what the fans are getting up to widely, and Der Westen has spoken to a police spokesperson who explained that there were some issues, but those were among Celtic fans, rather than involving any locals.

Andre Hartwich explained: “There are different groups within the fans who are enemies. The fans have only been fighting with each other, they haven’t attacked or harassed any old town visitors.”

It was a busy night for the German police because of Halloween and people going out to celebrate the event, and perhaps cause a bit of mischief. As well as not too much trouble from Celtic fans, the spokesperson sounded relieved to reveal “Not a single horror-clown was spotted.”

Celtic face Borussia Monchengladbach tonight in a crucial Champions League match. Around 6000 fans of the Glasgow club are expected to travel, despite only 2500 tickets being made available. Brendan Rodgers will be hoping his side can get revenge after Gladbach won the match at Celtic Park.
