Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier have become involved in the presidential elections at Portuguese side Sporting.
Both players, who featured for the Lisbon side in the past, have announced their support for candidate Frederico Varandas, who’s the chief doctor at the club.
The news is brought by newspaper O Jogo, and their names can be seen on the party’s official website, called Unir o Sporting.
Varandas is running to face the former club president Bruno de Carvalho, who has been recently voted out from Sporting, but won’t give up the role anytime soon.
Bruno de Carvalho has been involved in controversies during all his time as a Sporting president, and it was no different when selling Dier and Rojo.
After losing Dier to Tottenham, the president complained about the people who advised him, saying there was no need for him to leave using the release clause.
Eric Dier joined Sporting’s academy as a kid, and left for Spurs in a €5m move in 2014.
In Rojo’s case, Sporting used the help from Doyen Sports to sign the player from Spartak Moscow. When selling him to Manchester United, the club tried to pay the company less than they owed them, ignoring the increase in the player’s value. So in a judgement made last year, Sporting were found guilty and told to pay Doyen the full amount.
With both players knowing Varandas as a man who took care of them during their injuries at the club, it’s not a big surprise they’re supporting the doctor instead of the former president.
