João Carvalho is a 21 year old Benfica midfielder who last summer was repeatedly linked with a move to the Championship. Wolves and Leeds United were the sides being reported on and it seemed that Benfica were considering an exit but not entirely sure they wanted to lose the player.
Saturday’s edition of Portuguese newspaper Record claims Carvalho is now edging towards an actual move, after coming ‘very close’ to signing for Wolves last year.
It’s stated Nottingham Forest are in ‘very advanced’ talks to sign the youngster, and the negotiations are said to be ‘well under way’, although it’s made clear there’s also interest from other clubs.
Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira and the club’s manager Rui Vitória are ‘reshuffling’ the squad, and Carvalho would be a ‘victim’ of the changes.
Despite only appearing in 10 matches for the Lisbon club last season, Vitória said Carvalho “can see what others can’t see” after a win against Moreirense.
Following the 2017 Leeds and Wolves claims, Record believe this time the move could actually happened and the player end up at ‘mythical club’ Nottingham Forest.
During the January window, Forest signed Tobias Figueiredo, who had also previously been linked with a move to Elland Road. Despite early claims of talks going well, Leeds United seemed to pull away from the potential deal.
