With Unai Emery taking over at Arsenal, it’s natural that the weeks following will be filled with links based on educated guesses.
Anyone Emery tried to sign for PSG, Sevilla, or even going back as far as Spartak and Valencia, will be pushed forward for Arsenal. On top of that there’s all the players Emery worked well with at those clubs, and subsequent talk of reunions.
Sergio Rico fits into the latter bracket, with Estadio Deportivo reporting, according to their own information, that the goalkeeper is one of the options for Arsenal. Naturally, it’s explained Emery gave the 24 year old his debut at Sevilla, so that links in nicely with the claim.
Should Emery be looking for a big improvement on the goalkeeper quality he has then Rico may not be his man. The Spaniard wouldn’t be a big jump in quality on what Arsenal already have, and there’s always the question of adaption to the Premier League.
Rico wouldn’t be as expensive as some other goalkeeping options, but frankly that’s because he’s simply not as a good. At 24 there’s time to improve, and perhaps Emery sees a potential for the player to grow.
