When Laurent Depoitre was at Gent he was much linked with a move to English football.
Premier League and Championship clubs scout Belgian football regularly and Depoitre was a reasonable target for some. A few of the links felt a little over the top and optimistic, such as claims Tottenham Hotspur may be interested.
Depoitre ended up moving to FC Porto and it turned sour pretty quickly. The striker couldn’t get into the team often, and when he was there he failed to impress enough.
A single season in Portugal was all the Belgian stayed for, and he moved to Huddersfield Town during the last summer window. The 29 year old’s time in the Premier League has been a little better, but he hasn’t yet scored in 2018 or made an assist.
Should Depoitre want regular football as a starter then a return to Belgium could be a consideration.
Anderlecht Online have quoted the player as saying he’d like to work with former Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck again: “I learned a lot from him, without Hein I would not be where I am today, I would like to work with him again.”
The coach is now at Anderlecht, but if such a move was to happen in the summer, Depoitre would almost certainly have to take a hefty pay cut.
