Over the summer, Watford were in the business of trying to bring in a versatile forward, and they had one specific target in mind: Maxwel Cornet.
The Lyon forward was the subject of a bid from the Hornets, said to be around €12m, only to be turned down by Lyon, who wanted more, preferring to try and keep the 21-year-old at the club.
Ideal for Bruno Génésio’s fluid attack, the Ivory Coast international eventually ended up staying, but that doesn’t mean the interest has gone away, as Romain Poirot, Watford’s scout for France, explained on Monday to Olympique et Lyonnais.
Speaking about the Lyon forward, having tracked him since the age of 14, he said: “He’s part of the list of players who correspond to the qualities of the Premier League. Originally, he’s a centre-forward. He loved scoring goals. He’s a brave player and that’s an important attribute in today’s game”.
While he doesn’t explicitly mention his club’s interest, it isn’t a coincidence that Watford decided to go after Cornet a month after they plucked Poirot from Manchester City.
The French scout is clearly a very big fan of the young forward, who has played more of a wide role in recent years, scoring five goals and picking up seven assists in 37 appearances this season.
