Last summer, when Newcastle United were looking for a defender in the transfer market, the Magpies were heavily linked to Ruben Semedo.
The Portuguese media even published a document showing the clubs had a deal for the move, but for some reason, the player ended up going to Spanish side Villarreal.
But maybe Newcastle United got lucky not not signing Semedo, because his first season in La Liga hasn’t exactly been the best. Professionally and personally.
Currently struggling with muscle injuries, the player has made only four league appearances this season, even though this is still not his biggest problem.
Semedo is also dealing with some serious behavioural issues, and that’s the subject of a big story from newspaper El Confidencial today.
The original report actually came from La Provincia, who claims the player was arrested on the night of Monday to Tuesday for the crimes of injury, illegal detention and theft.
The episode happened on February 12th, when the victim claims to have been tied up, beaten by the player and some friends, and then taken to Semedo’s house. The person has shown some bruises, and an ankle injury, which forces him to walk with crutches.
And now comes the worst part: first, the victim claims that some of the men fired shots, even though none of them hit him. And his house keys were also stolen. While he was locked in a room at Semedo’s house, the victim believes the criminals went to his house looking for money.
This is not the first aggression issue that Semedo has been through in Spain, since he had a fight at a nightclub some months earlier. Villarreal are said to be following the case along with local police, while Newcastle are probably glad they didn’t sign the player.
It may have been dramatic off the pitch had Newcastle got the defender, but that’s not exactly what Rafael Benitez needs.
