Liverpool favourite Daniel Agger announced his retirement at the age of 31 last week, which came as a bit of shock.
Agger was linked with a move to several Serie A clubs in the past few weeks, but it seems the former Danish captain had to hang up his boots due to regular injuries.
Speaking to Danish media outlet Jyllands-Posten, Agger revealed how he was forced to take painkillers just to player, and that obviously signaled his career should be coming to an end.
“I have taken too many painkillers in my career. I know it, and that is bad. But I’ve stopped doing it now.”
Agger was considered as one of the top defenders in the Premier League during his time at Liverpool, but regular injuries means he made just 175 league appearances in 9 seasons.
He left Liverpool for Brondby a couple of years ago after taking a considerable wage cut, and it’s unlikely he’ll be involved in the game in any form post retirement.
Agger won the Community Shield and Capital One Cup, and is fondly remembered on the Kop.
