Jan Vertonghen, straight as he always is, has pretty much ruled out the chance of returning to Belgium to play football towards the end of his career.
Tottenham’s Super Jan is all over the Belgian media at the moment, as he gets ready to become the country’s highest appearance maker on Tuesday against Cyprus, and he’s been asked so many questions it’s a wonder he hasn’t started contradicting himself.
“I don’t think so, I am in London and my family too,” Vertonghen said to DH on a football return return to Belgium, and made it clear it’s not even certain he’ll return to the country to live.
Earlier on in the same international break, Vertonghen’s mother was quizzed about the defender potentially returning to Ajax, and that seems a likelier scenario for when the time for a Tottenham exit comes.
Vertonghen doesn’t turn 31 years of age until April, but with the whole 97th cap fanfare, it’s very much felt like a retrospective on the player’s career. At Tottenham since his 2012 move from Ajax, Vertonghen has a contract with Spurs until June 2019, when he’ll still ‘only’ be 32 years of age.
