Eventually getting his move away from Aston Villa, ending up in Marseille, Jordan Amavi had a pretty tumultuous summer to say the least.
First appearing to be on his way to Sevilla on a permanent transfer, the Villain saw the deal collapse after the La Liga club weren’t happy with something they found during a medical regarding the knee injury he suffered the year before.
Switching their demands from a full transfer to a loan, Aston Villa eventually walked away, which is when Marseille swooped in with an offer of their own: a temporary deal with a view to buy likely to be automatically triggered throughout the season.
Speaking to Téléfoot over the weekend, the French left-back went back over that failed move to Spain, and explained exactly what happened.
He said: “During the medical, all goes well. No one says anything. That evening, when I returned to my hotel, my agent called me and told me they didn’t want to sign me. He says they found something in my right knee, the one I had an operation on.”
Following that phone call, the Aston Villa loanee revealed he was sent to Madrid to undergo further tests, yet the man who looked at his knee probably shouldn’t have done so.
He explained: “I saw a specialist who was a foot specialist. Therefore, it had nothing to do with my injury. He made me do two or three tests. Basic ones. I mean, for a specialist… Even I was surprised. Then, that evening, I return to my hotel, and my agent calls me again and says they don’t want me.”
Obviously shocked, the left-back got over it, understanding ‘there are worse things in life’, and eventually got his move from Aston Villa to Marseille, which ruined Steve Bruce’s unlikely hope of keeping him.
