Bacary Sagna is still very much available, and for free. Having enjoyed an extended summer, likely partly by design, the former Manchester City and Arsenal fullback is ready for his next challenge.
L’Equipe believe Sagna is now close to signing for a club, but they don’t mention an Arsenal return, despite several English reports suggesting one is possible.
Sagna has been spending time at his home in London, which the French newspaper believe is his base, and they say he’s already turned down Brighton & Hove Albion, but could be set to sign for Leicester City or West Ham.
Despite being close to London, it seems Brighton wasn’t for Sagna. L’Equipe say the Frenchman ‘almost signed’ for Chelsea but at the last minute Davide Zappacosta was preferred, it’s pointed out the Italian has the same agent as Antonio Conte, with the newspaper seemingly hinting at something.
West Ham and Leicester City are keen on the 34 year old, and both could probably do a positivity bounce. The Hammers and the Foxes are having a Sporting CP transfer headache which could so easily have been avoided with better transfer planning, and signing Sagna would be a reasonable distraction.
The ‘next few days’ could accelerate things, explain L’Equipe, and that sounds about right. Free agent signings are mostly conducted soon after the window, with situations appearing odd if a player moves towards October without a club.
West Ham may have the advantage, being in London, but Leicester isn’t too far away, maybe Brighton will send another offer to Sagna, wrapped in a map pointing out the seaside route.
Sagna’s return is ‘imminent’ say L’Equipe.
