Every single day, there’s a brief mention of Juventus’ interest in Liverpool’s Emre Can in the Italian press, and 90% of the time we ignore it because that’s all it is, a brief mention.

Rarely is there any explanation about how the Serie A champions could actually get the German midfielder to come in and supplant Sami Khedira, but Corriere dello Sport on Wednesday finally do.

The 23-year-old arrived from Bayer Leverkusen three years ago for just over £10m and has gradually become one of the key players in the team, making 40 appearances last year in all competitions under Jürgen Klopp.

With a contract running out next year, this summer was always going to be the one when the rumours of an exit were the strongest, and with the player seemingly stalling on signing a renewal, Liverpool fans could be in for a long summer.

Corriere dello Sport explain that Juventus are hoping they can put enough pressure on him with their own project to convince him to not sign a new deal with the Reds.

If Can hasn’t renewed his deal by, let’s say, the end of July, Liverpool might start considering selling their midfielder, knowing that if they keep him, he’ll be able to talk to clubs for a free transfer next January.

While Liverpool are busy trying to get incoming transfers sorted, this seems to be going under the radar so far this summer, perhaps intentionally.

One to keep an eye on.
