Santa Clara manager Vasco Matos has insisted he was not approached by Southampton to become their new manager.
Record have a short interview with the 44-year-old today in which he insists Southampton did not come calling for him.
Matos was one of several names linked with the Southampton job after they sacked Russell Martin in the middle of December.
The Saints elected to part ways with the man who brought them up from the Championship after a dismal campaign which had left them nine points from safety at that point in the season.
A quick managerial search was conducted before Ivan Jurić was named as their new manager on December 21st. He was something of a surprise appointment, having only left Roma a month previously.
In that short spell, several other names were linked with the position. Matos was one of them, having impressed with Santa Clara this season. They have 11 wins from 20 games in all competition so far.
In fact, in his 60 games as manager there since arriving in 2023, he’s managed a PPG of 1.98. they currently sit a very respectable fifth in the Portuguese league table.
That makes him an interesting name, but Matos insists no offer came from Southampton for him, despite reports saying otherwise.
“No, I didn’t receive any invitation,” he said when asked specifically about contact from the Saints.
“I don’t have a dream job. Of course, I want to reach other levels, and I want to continue developing my work, but I am a down-to-earth coach. I’m making my way. I don’t know what will happen in the future, but obviously I have a lot of ambition.”
