Newcastle United also have their eye on Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen, albeit as an alternative to a different target this month.
That’s according to BILD, who report the ‘Magpies are waiting in the wings’ for the Dutch forward if they can’t get their preferred candidate to St James Park.
The newspaper reports that that there could be unexpected movement around Malen, who appears set to join Aston Villa.
A move to Villa Park is ‘increasingly likely’ after they pushed over the last week, with the Dutchman reportedly keen on the switch.
However, according to BILD’s information, Newcastle are also interested in the player. The Magpies are ‘still waiting in the wings’.
They say that Newcastle currently have another offensive star at the top of their list and ‘on the hook’ at this moment in time. They’re working on that deal but if it does not go through as hoped, Malen is seen as the idea replacement candidate.
That should concern Aston Villa, who have seemingly made Malen a priority target and even set up selling Jaden Philogene to Ipswich Town to both make room for him and help finance the deal.
Perhaps this insistence that Newcastle are also interested and waiting in the wings is an attempt to hurry them along. It’s been made clear they don’t want to match Dortmund’s asking price and the German side won’t be budging on it, so this feels like a possible attempt to nudge Aston Villa along.
