Newcastle United are in the picture to sign Barcelona’s Eric García in the winter market.

That’s according to a ‘confidential’ report from Catalan newspaper Sport, and they say Newcastle have made efforts to secure his services.

The centre-back was on loan at Girona last season and has struggled for regular game time since returning to the Camp Nou in the summer. He clocked in 541 minutes from 13 games in all competitions for the La Liga side and it includes four starts.

Newcastle want to offer the 23-year-old an escape route in January and made an offer for him. The details of the Tyneside club’s proposal aren’t mentioned, but the newspaper says the Catalan club find it ‘more interesting’.

The Spain international spent four years at Manchester City, making 35 appearances in all competitions. He left them as a free agent and returned to Barcelona in the summer of 2021.

Eddie Howe’s side have presented him an opportunity to return to England next month, but Sport claim García isn’t considering Newcastle’s offer as he has no plans to leave in January.

The defender wants to fight for his place under Hansi Flick and will consider leaving Barca next summer.

Newcastle have to convince García to change his mind to acquire his signature in January.
