Arsenal signed Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna in the summer transfer window.
The defender had impressed during the European championships for Italy and in his time at Arsenal, he has made a mark already by scoring once in the Premier League and showing his ability to invert in midfield and help build attacks.
As he prepares to return to action after an injury, there is a legal battle brewing in Italy.
Il Tempo, as relayed by Giallorossi.net, report the battle involves Calafiori’s former clubs AS Roma and Swiss side Basel.
When Arsenal signed the Azzurri man, they paid a total of €50m to Bologna, who had to pay 50% of their capital gain to Basel.
Since the Rossoblu had signed Calafiori for about €4m, they paid €23.5m to Basel.
Having said that, Roma had agreed a 40% sell-on fee in the deal when they had sold the player to Basel in 2022. The Swiss giants have refused to pay the amount desired by the Giallorossi and this has been ongoing since the move happened.
There is ‘no sign of payment’ yet and five months after the transfer to the Premier League, things are where they were in the summer.
Roma are certain they’re due €9.4m and are relying on contractual paperwork they believe backs them up. The indication is that the case will be taken to court which may mean Arsenal are required to give evidence.
